AMVETS Scholarships

AMVETS Scholarships are awarded to active duty military personnel, honorably discharged veterans, reserves, spouses, and children or grandchildren who demonstrate financial need for tuition assistance to afford enrollment into an accredited degree program.

AMVETS Scholarships

AMVETS is the abbreviation for America Veterans, it was formed in 1944 by the World War 2 veterans, it is a non-partisan, volunteer-led organization.

The AMVETS organization annually awards a scholarship to veterans/active military personnel and even deceased veteran, their daughter, sons, and even grand-children.

This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic performance as well as the financial needs, the scholarship is given to deserving high school JROTC students and veterans pursuing a higher education (JROTC – Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps).

Application Category

Anyone can apply if they come into any of the following categories.

  • AMVET Auxilary member

  • Son of AMVET member

  • Son of an AMVET Auxiliary Member or Sons of AMVETS

  • Daughter of AMVET, AMVET Auxiliary Member or Sons of AMVETS

  • Grandson of AMVET, AMVET Auxiliary Member or Sons of AMVETS

  • Granddaughter of AMVET, AMVET Auxiliary Member or Sons of AMVETS

Eligibility Category

  • Must be a United States Citizen

  • Must provide evidence of active duty status or veteran status having served honorably

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

  • Must demonstrate financial need

  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment to an eligible program

  • Must not be in default on a federal student loan

  • Must not be convicted under state or federal law for sale of or possession of illegal drugs

  • Must agree to authorize AMVETS to publicize your scholarship award, if you are selected.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicant must submit a complete, signed application, together with all supporting documents, within the listed deadline.

  • The application cycle usually starts from mid-January and lasts till April 30th.

  • Scholarship selection would be regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, or disability

  • The award determination will be made on the selection committee’s scores of the overall quality of the application and the scholarship essay.

  • With this scholarship, you can get admission to colleges such as the University of Phoenix.

Types of Scholarship

Three scholarships are specific to Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves:

  • The AMVETS Scholarship:$4,000 – ($1,000 awarded annually over four years). three (3) awarded each year

  • The Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo Family Foundation Memorial Scholarship:$12,000 – ($3,000 awarded annually over four years), two (2) awarded each year

  • The Henry G. Huestis Memorial Scholarship:$1,000 – (One payment of $1,000), one (1) awarded each year

  • Two scholarships are specific to children/grandchildren of Veterans, Active Duty, Guard/Reserves who are currently High School seniors (2017-2018):

    • The AMVETS Scholarship: $4,000 – ($1,000) awarded annually over four years) six (6) awarded each year

    • The JROTC Scholarship: $1,000 – (one payment of $1,000), one (1) awarded each year; JROTC ONLY.

  1) Will I get an AMVETS scholarship if I am a default on a federal student loan?  

No, You will not be awarded an AMVETS scholarship if you are a default on a federal student loan. 

  2) When does the application for AMVETS scholarship open? 

The application for AMVETS scholarship opens during the mid of January, and the deadline goes up to until the end of April. 

  3) What documents do I need to while submitting my application for an AMVETS scholarship?  

The documents you need to submit while applying for an AMVETS scholarship are as follows:

  • A copy of the veteran's record of service. 

  • A copy of your high school or college transcript. 

  • A complete and signed copy of the applicant's tax documents.

  • A copy of Students Aid report provided by FAFSA.

  • Acceptance letter from a accredite college.  

  4) What should I do to renew my AMVETS scholarship? 

These are some following points which you can follow:

  • The school prescribed academic standards should be maintained. 

  • Evidence of the enroll for the next year of studies must be provided. 

  • Any amounts remaining unused within five years will be forfeited.  

  5) What type of scholarship is an AMVTES?

The AMVETS scholarship is a financial/need-based scholarship provided to students who are son/ daughter, grandson/granddaughter of a veteran. It is not a merit-based scholarship, but you surely need to be eligible as per the requirement set by the AMVETS officials.
