Ashford University is a private for-profit university, founded in the year 1918 by Sisters of St. Francis in Clinton. The university was originally named as Mount St. Clare College located in San Diego. Initially named as Mt. St. Clare College (MSC) became The Franciscan University in December 2002. University granted first master’s degree in May 2004 and changed its name to The Franciscan University of the Prairies the same year.
