What is a Burger King Scholarship?

It was created in the memory of the Burger King co-founder, James ‘Jim’ W. McLamore in the year 2005. It has a charitable, non-profit organization set up. Till the present time, the burger king scholarship was awarded for more than thirty thousand students and the burger king scholarship amount has been worth 37 million till date, for the Burger King employees and their respective families across the countries like United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. 

In the year 2018, the burger king scholarships winners have been awarded by the foundation of approximately 3.7 million dollars to 3,400 students and more, in the North America region alone. It is awarded for both the high school and degree level students.

The prize money for the scholarship ranges between $1000 dollars to $50,000 and is aimed to help the students cover their cost of attendance at a college/university or the post-secondary technical or vocational institute.

The students are selected on the basis of their grade point average or GPA, the extra-curricular activities they are involved in, work experience if they hold any and the community service practices. 

The burger king scholarship 2019-2020 deadline starts from 15th October 2018 to 15th December 2018. The foundation with the help of its Burger King employees, the suppliers, and franchisees, has successfully made a positive and lasting effect on the communities where we work and live.

Presently, the foundation covers the Burger King Scholars Program and the Burger King Family Fund.

  • The scholars' program aims to assist the employees, the spouses of employees or the domestic partners, their children and the seniors of high school in the states of US, Canada, and Puerto Rico and helps them in fulfilling their education.
  • It stands on the motto and values of integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, good standards, and ethical and fine education, which defines the brand and its co-founder.

  • The values have pursued the people to become aware of the dream and the foundation on which the burger king was established. Till date, it has upheld that name and has continued to honor the legacy to the dedication to education. 

  • The burger king scholarship program is administered and governed by Scholarship America. The awards are presented without any discrimination on various bases such as color, religion, race, disability, nationality etc.

Eligibility for the Burger King scholarship 

Burger King General Track

It is available for the senior students in high school who fulfill the criteria below.

The employees, their spouses or the domestic partners of the employees, their children, who meet the eligibility criteria and requirements for the general and Employee-based track, would be considered for the award in the two tracks, however, if they’re selected, they will receive just one award.

The candidates are required to fulfill the following requirements-

  • They should be living in the countries of the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico.

  • Should be graduating as high school seniors (for the U.S. and Puerto Rico) or graduating from class 12th (Canada) or either must be graduating from homeschool (applicable to all the three countries).

  • The high school cumulative grade point average must be of 2.5 or higher on the scale of 4.0 or equivalent.

  • The students must plan to enroll for the full-time, without any hindrances, for the academic year of 2019-2020, at an accredited college (either two or four years), vocational/technical institute or university in the three countries.

Burger King Employee based Track

The employee-based track consists of two parts as follows:

 a) For the employees, partners, and spouses, the children of the employee who are pursuing traditional education.

  • The applicants must be living in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico.

  • Should be a burger king employee or must be participating in the corporation of franchisee of burger king.

  • Should be a spouse or the domestic partner of the employee in Burger King Corporation.

  • Must be a dependent child of the employee or anyone participating in the franchise.

  • He / She should be graduating as a senior from high school or must be holding a GED certificate, should be a graduate from 12th grade (Canada), or a graduate from home-schooling (all three countries), or must be an undergraduate/graduate student in U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada.

  • The GPA must be of 2.5 or higher on the scale of 4.0 or must be equivalent.

  • The student must plan to enroll for the academic year at an accredited university/college or a vocational/technical school in the respective countries.

The employees should be active for the designated post’s payroll for the span of at least 6 months, as of the deadline of the application and must be employed during the time awards. They are first announced.

The domestic partners are described as-

  • The only partner of the employee

  • The partner and the employee stay together in the same residence and have the same intention of residing together for the future.

  • Both the partners must be at least 18 years of age and are mentally fit to sign a contract.

  • The employee and the partner are not blood-related which violates the rule of marriage by law.

  • The partners are not married to someone else or involved in another partnership.

  • The dependent children can be defined as- Biological, Legitimately adopted or step-children, residing with the employees or supported by them.

  • The employees and their spouses can be enrolled full-time or part-time. Children of the employees must be enrolled for the course full time without any hindrance, for the full academic session.

b) Spouses/domestic partner and the employee doing the enrichment program

The enrichment programs consist of a computer, accounting and language courses but are not limited to that.

The requirements for the applicants’ are-

  • The applicants must be staying in the US, Puerto Rico or Canada.

  • Should be a burger king employee or a designated franchise employee.

  • Must be a spouse or a domestic partner of an employee at Burger King or its franchise.

  • Should plan to take admission in less than the part-time or on the basis of GED certification or any other relevant courses which improves learning. (The program must be undertaken at an accredited institute in Canada, US or Puerto Rico). 

The employees should be active for the designated post’s payroll for the span of at least 6 months, as of the deadline of the Burger King Scholarship application form and must be employed during the time awards. They are first announced.

James W. McLamore Scholarship

The recipients shall be chosen from Burger King Scholar’s Pool which includes both the above-mentioned tracks. The eligibility criteria are as follows-

  • Students must be the citizens of either the US or Canada.

  • The students who are graduates from high school within the past three years or are the full-time students who are from a senior high school or the ones who have been homeschooled from Puerto Rico, the United States or Canada.

  • The students applying to a four-year accredited university/college as a full-time freshman located in the US or Canada is exempted from the taxation which falls under the section 501 (c )(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • The cumulative grade point average of the students should be at least 3.3.

  • The students who have scored a minimum ACT score of 25 or a minimum of 1220 SAT score.

  • The students who have demonstrated a dynamic leadership status and role for the community service, co-curricular activities, athletics and more (Some of them can be the sports team, fraternal life and so on).

  • The ones who have relevant work experience.

The directors, officers and their respective partners /spouses, the children of directors and officers at Burger King McLamore foundation are ineligible to apply for the scholarship.

Burger King scholarship selection

The selection process will be web-based as the online application would be provided. The first 50 thousand applications will be submitted and processed. The applications must be completed in English, French or Spanish. The applications shouldn’t be incomplete.

Evaluation of recipients for every pool would be as follows-

  • Burger King General Track- The preference would be given to the academic record of the candidate (for 50%) and the involvement in community service and school. (50%).

  • Burger King Employee-Based Track- It is based on the children of the employees, their spouses, or an employee pursuing education. The emphasis would be given to the academic record of the candidate (50%), his/her participation in community activity and school (50%).

  • Burger King Employee-Based Track- For employees or the domestic partner/spouse or an employee who is pursuing the enrichment program. The consideration would be given to the applicant’s participation in school or community services (50%) and the length of service with designated employees.

  • James W. McLamore Whopper- The consideration will be given to the academic record of the applicant and his/her participation in community and school services, their work experience. Assistance and need financially would be considered.


How to apply for the Burger King scholarship?

The students can apply by creating an account on the official burger king page. The candidate is supposed to create a valid username and password to register for an account.

The applicant will get the notification through the email validation process prior to creating the account. The email address must be valid.  After this step, the student must fill in all the details requested for the student profile.

After the account is made and all the details have been filled, the Burger King scholarship application form will be made accessible. At the time of the application process, the student can leave the site by logging out and save the information as well by clicking on the Save option, present on the website.

Some information which would be needed for the application is as follows:

  • The work experience list and the involvement in community and school activities.

  • The present transcripts of the grades.

  • Information on the Burger King Employee if the application is supposed to be affiliated by an employee.

  • Family’s financial information must be provided, if applicable. The recent copy of parents tax form filled with Revenue Canada or IRS would be helpful.

The application must be reviewed and cross-checked before submitting. A hard copy of the application should be kept in order to maintain the records. The online application’s printed copy need not be sent to the foundation.

All the pages of the application form should be completed in the required format.  Editing of information is not possible once the application is submitted.

Documents required for Burger King scholarship

While applying for the scholarship, you need to submit certain mandatory documents. Keep the following documents ready to avoid last minute hassle.

  • The students are required to submit the high school grades transcripts or the college grade transcripts.

  • The reports of the grades are not accepted. If the documents are online or unofficial, it should clearly mention the name of the student, grades, school name and the credit hours for the course and the term undertaken.

  • Applicants are responsible for submitting the correct information relevant to the application form.

  • The acknowledgment receipt will be emailed to the students by Scholarship America. The incomplete application form will not be considered and once 50,000 submissions are completed, the applications applied after that will not be processed.

  • The details are reviewed by Scholarship America alone. The limited information shall be shared by Burger King Corporation

The Burger King Scholarship notification would be announced for the candidates in the month of May.

If the student is selected as a recipient, then he/she will be required for submission of the additional information for the Burger King Scholarship result.

If the information is not provided, the recipients would be considered ineligible. All the applicants would not be selected as recipients for the program.

Burger King scholarship awards

The distribution of Burger King Scholarship awards is determined by the amount of the funds raised annually.

The application deadline will be considered and prior to that, the applications will be reviewed for the eligibility criteria. The award selections are made by Scholarship America.

The process for award distribution is as follows-

  • The highly skilled and qualified students who possess the work experience, leadership qualities, are in financial need are granted up to 3 James W. McLamore scholarships whooper worth $50,000.

  • The two qualified employees in the five regions are granted up to 10 Regional Awards worth $5000, from the group of complete and eligible applicants.

  • The most qualified U.S. restaurants employee is granted one Steven M. Lewis Foundation award which has prize money of $5000 and the eligible candidate with a submitted application is selected on that basis.

  • Four Bravokilo Awards of $5000 is granted to the qualified Bravokilo employees and the candidates are selected from the pool of submitted and eligible applicants.

  • A qualified Ghai Management employee gets one Ghai Management Award worth 5000 dollars selected from the pool of eligible candidates.

  • There are many more award designations which are determined by the Burger King Foundation and Corporation, its participating franchisee etc.

The franchisee of burger king and the burger king McLamore foundation designates preferences for the recipients of $1000 awards through the following.

  • General Track- The high school zip code, the state/province, and the country.

  • Employee Based Track- It is a burger king designation or the group name of a franchise. The number of awards granted to the applicants in each pool would be in the proportion to the applications which were received from each pool. (Includes employees, their children, the domestic partner or spouse pursuing traditional or enrichment education).

  • Both the track based awards can’t be renewed. However, one thousand dollars employee based track applicant can reapply for the program every year if they meet the eligibility requirements and then they can get up to 4 awards. 

  • General Track recipients can receive the award only once. The past recipients might not reapply. (The recipients are entitled to receive 1 thousand dollars employee based track award and may receive a regional or James W. McLamore whooper award. When and if they receive these awards, they are not eligible to reapply in the years to come). 

  • For the undergraduate studies, General Track Scholarship Awards are applicable (only for accredited institutes).

  • Employee-Based Track is for graduate, undergraduate studies, and non-traditional courses. Amount of the awards might not exceed the amount of the educational program.

  • The notification for the status of the applicants is done in April in the following year. All the applicants are not entitled to the scholarships.

Burger King Scholarship award payments

One installment payment is made in the month of August. Scholarship America mails the checks to the home address provided by the recipient. Checks are payable to the college on behalf of the students.

Scholarship checks are issued by Scholarship America on behalf of the Burger King McLamore Foundation. The recipients of James W. Mclamore taking up enrichment courses will get a different payment.

Responsibilities of a Burger King Scholarship recipient 

There are certain things that need to be taken care of. As a recipient, you must ensure that you carry out the following responsibilities. 

  • A complete acceptance form must be submitted by the recipient to Scholarship America before the deadline.

  • The University or the College must be notified about the details of the awards by the recipient and the scholarship check must be delivered on time.

  • If there is any change about school enrollment, the address or other information, a recipient should notify Scholarship America.
