Financial Aid Overview

Not every student has the financial capacity to enroll in an accredited college as the tuition and fees may be unaffordable as students come from different backgrounds. The assistance or support received by an eligible student in order to pay the fees and other expenses in a college or university from federal or private organizations is called financial aid. Financial aids generally cover tuition and fees, books, accommodation, laboratory fees, transportation, books, and supplies.

There are a number of aids provided by the states, companies, and various organizations. These aids help students concentrate on their education and pursue their career without any distractions financially. Financial aid is given to students based on many factors. It can be need-based, merit-based or any other criteria that decide the eligibility of the student.

As financial aids are the basic support students receive for their education, not every aid is to be paid back. Financial aids are basically classified into four:

  • Grants: For the students coming from families that are not financially sound, aids like grants support through their education. Grant is the amount received by students and their families for the college or university expenses. The students do not have to pay back the money the received as grants.

  • Loans: Loans are given to students enrolled in universities or colleges and who are in need. The students have to pay the money back for loans as it is borrowing whereas grants and scholarships need not be paid back.

  • Scholarships: The financial aid is given to students based on their academic status, or other criteria is known as scholarship. Scholarships are basically awards which need not be paid back.

  • Work-Study: The part-time jobs offered by the federal organizations in order to help the students with their educational expenses are known as work-study programs. As this aid works like a job, the student does not have to pay the money back.

The students can apply for various financial aids by completing the FAFSA. A student can seek financial aid by checking the eligibility criteria. These financial aids make it possible for the students to realize their educational ambitions.
