Graceland University was founded in 1895  and sponsored by Community of Christ. The university land is donated by the members of the church. In 1997, the administration building was named as Higdon Administration Building. The university received its accreditation in 1917. Graceland became a four-year college in 1960. Graceland College became Graceland University on June 1, 2000. The Graceland is now a private not-for-profit university.

The university encourages many sports which include Football, Softball, Women Soccer, Men Soccer. All the games are handled by the particular sports coach so that students can improve their sports skills.
