Madonna University is a private not-for-profit, Catholic liberal arts institution that was established in the year 1937 by Mother Mary DeSales Tocka in suburban Livonia, Michigan with the enrollment of just 18 students. In 1982, the university instituted a master's level program and became a university in the year 1991.

The university launched its first doctoral program i.e., the doctor of Nursing Practice in 2009. From then on, the institution became one of the nation's largest Franciscan universities with a combined undergraduate and graduate student of around 4500.

Madonna now has more than 123 faculty members with more than 100 career-focused majors with an enrollment of more than 3200 non-traditional students. They also have a campus at the University Center in Gaylord.

The university also provides a variety of online courses from various disciplines in bachelor’s, graduate, associate degrees and certificate programs.

The university has campuses at Livonia (main campus), Gaylord, Macomb, and China.

MU has a celebrated nursing program with a legacy that is 50 years old and is the first in the country to provide a bachelor’s degree in Sign-Language Studies.
