Marshall University is a public research university that was founded in the year 1837 in Huntington, West Virginia. It is a public comprehensive university with a rich history as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in West Virginia.

Named after John Marshall, this institution was founded in 1837. Even though the institute was named as Marshall college in 1858, it still hadn't attained the status of a true college. Closed down for much of the 1860s, the institution was resurrected and renamed as State Normal School of Marshall College in 1867. In 1920, this school started offering four-year degrees for the first time. Enrollment in the University reached 16,500 in 2004.
