Military and Veteran Scholarship Overview

The American citizens who willingly joined the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Navy to serve the country are awarded scholarships as a gesture of respect for their services in the names past heroes. Such scholarships are classified as Military and Veteran Scholarships. These scholarships are huge support and encouragement to such students to pursue their basic and higher education.

The scholarships are a way of paying these students gratitude for being generous enough to keep everyone in their country safe and secure. Certain organizations award scholarships to students who have military backgrounds to cover the accommodation, food, books and other college supplies including the tuition and fees of the university or college. The scholarships are awarded to students who are veterans as well. The students are given the massive opportunity to continue with their basic and higher education which they left for the country.

The universities, colleges and other vocational institutions that focus on students who have a military or veteran background are offered scholarships as well. Some of the scholarship programs offered by certain state and private organizations, corporations and groups are enlisted below:

  • Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC): The scholarships offered by organizations like the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) are of great financial aid to these courage citizens. 

  • Illinois National Guard Grant: The undergraduates and graduates of the Illinois National Guard(ING) are eligible to receive the Illinois National Guard Grant that supports the students through their financial crisis through college.

  • Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program: The Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program finance the education of students who were members of the Alabama National Guard. The students have to be the State of Alabama residents as well.

  • Anchor Scholarship Foundation: Anchor Scholarship Foundation assists the students who are the children or spouses of Surface Navy personnel who are on active duty, retired or honorably discharged.

  • Bernard E. Dillon Vocational Skills Scholarships: Bernard E. Dillon Vocational Skills Scholarships are offered to high school students enrolled in accredited universities, colleges or vocational institutions.

  • The applicant must be appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor, state senator or state representative.

  • The applicant must enroll in a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) or another undergraduate officer commissioning program while enrolled in the institution, as certified by the institution.

  • The applicant must complete school initiated TASSP application.

  • The applicant must agree to complete four years of ROTC training or the equivalent of four years of ROTC training if the institution awards ROTC credit for prior service in any branch of the U.S. Armed Services or the Texas Armed National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, United States Coast Guard, or United States Merchant Marine, or another undergraduate officer commissioning program.

  • The applicant must graduate no later than six years after the date first enrolled.

  • The applicant after graduation, enter into a four-year commitment to be a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, United States Coast Guard, or United States Merchant Marine or contract to serve as a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States.

  • The applicant must repay the scholarship if the requirements are not met.

  • The applicant must meet the satisfactory academic progress requirements set by the institution.
