About the Scholarship

In order to improve the educational conditions of the students pursuing a career in the field of teaching, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Student Assistance Corporation award scholarship programs.

The Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program is awarded to the residents of the state, enrolled in a teacher education program as juniors, seniors or post-baccalaureate students in an eligible university or college.

The recipient of the scholarship program must assure to continue as a teacher in one of the eligible schools in the state.


Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program Awards

  • The scholarship is funded by the state government and organized by the financial aid office. The eligible recipients of the scholarship are awarded an amount of $5000.

  • The students are eligible to renew the scholarship for 3 consecutive years after the first year as the recipient.

  • The applicant must agree to pursue as a teacher of one of the eligible schools in the state for the number of years of receiving the scholarship.

  • The students must be employed as a full-time teacher otherwise.

  • The recipients of the scholarship are expected to pay the scholarship amount back inclusive of interest if refused or discontinued the profession.


Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program Application

The students are selected for the scholarship program by the financial aid office based on certain eligibility criteria.

The following documents are to be submitted to the financial aid office in order to be considered for the scholarship program:

  • A letter of recommendation from an official of a teacher education program approved by the state government.

  • Official copies of university or college transcript including the test score records.


Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program Deadline

The application must be submitted to the scholarship committee of the financial aid office before 15th April without fail. Any application received past the deadline will be considered invalid.


Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be a Tennessee resident.

  • The student must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen.

  • The student should have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 for the teacher education program.

  • The student should be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or half-time graduate student.

  • The applicant should not be a licensed teacher.
