Southern Connecticut State University is a public state institution that was established on September 11, 1893, as the New Haven State Normal School and is located in Connecticut. By the year 1937, the university had grown into a four-year institution offering a bachelor's degree. In the year 1959, the State Board of Education recognized and authorized the university and named it as the New Haven State Teachers College.

In the year 1959, after the institution had moved to their present location, the state legislature expanded the university offerings to the liberal arts program. In the year 1983, the institution was recognized and got its university status. Southern Connecticut State University campus separates the academics and residential sections of the campus.
