The College Monk exists to help students and families make clearer, better-informed decisions about higher education. Every ranking, guide, review, and tool on this site is produced under the editorial standards outlined below.

Why You Can Trust Us

• Independent. We are not owned by any university, testing organization, lender, or admissions consulting firm.
• Transparent data sources. Every data point — acceptance rates, tuition, graduation rates, student counts — is pulled from IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), the National Center for Education Statistics, and official university disclosures.
• Expert-reviewed. Guides covering admissions strategy, financial aid, test prep, and university selection are reviewed by writers with direct experience in admissions consulting and higher-education research.
• Regularly updated. Data-driven pages are refreshed annually (or whenever IPEDS publishes new figures). Every article carries a "last updated" date.

How We Grade Colleges

The College Monk Report Card summarizes each institution with letter grades across four dimensions:

• Selectivity — derived from the current reported acceptance rate. Lower acceptance rates produce higher grades.
• Academics — primarily driven by six-year graduation rate, adjusted upward for strong student-faculty ratios (15:1 or better).
• Class Size — based on the student-faculty ratio. Smaller ratios receive higher grades.
• Value — based on published tuition. Institutions under $15,000 earn the highest grades; those above $60,000 receive lower grades. Net price after aid can differ significantly — always request a personalized estimate from the school.

Grades are directional, not definitive. A "B" in Academics does not mean a university is a weak academic fit for any particular student. We encourage users to treat the Report Card as a starting point and complement it with campus visits, program-specific research, and conversations with current students.

How We Write Rankings & "Best Of" Lists

Ranking lists combine public IPEDS data with editorial judgment. For every ranking list, we disclose:

• The criteria used (e.g., acceptance rate, graduation rate, program strength, location)
• The year of the underlying data
• Whether any paid placement is involved (answer: never — rankings are editorial)

AI & Automation Policy

We use machine assistance for data aggregation, formatting, and auto-linking internal references. Every published piece of editorial content — guides, rankings, reviews, and explainers — is reviewed, edited, and signed off on by a named human editor before publication. We do not publish unreviewed AI-generated articles.
