How to Become a Mechanical Engineer

This article provides in-depth information into What is a Mechanical Engineer? What Mechanical Engineer do? Degrees for Mechanical Engineer, Steps to become Mechanical Engineer and much more.

A Mechanical Engineer creates, designs, develops and maintains mechanical systems through the application of physics and engineering principles. Field of Mechanical Engineering is one of the most diversified fields of Engineering.

What does a Mechanical Engineer do ?

A mechanical engineer might work in the automotive industry, aerospace and transport industries, power generation, refineries, insurance industries, building services, railway systems design, consumer goods design and production and management consultancies.

  • Does intensive research to build a mechanical device that can replace manual labor.

  • Analyses and transforms a manual process to automated process.

  • Creates Blueprints, designs mechanical devices and monitors the manufacturing process.

  • Builds prototypes and tests them.

  • Re-designs or reverse engineer mechanical processes or devices.

  • Maintains and repairs mechanical devices.

Steps for becoming a Mechanical Engineer

Earn A Bachelor’s Degree In Mechanical Engineering

According to BLS, a Bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement to get an entry-level job in this field. Employers prefer a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering accredited from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). However, students also have the option to choose a two-year pre-engineering degree. They can work as a mechanical drafter. Later they can also transfer to a 4-year program to finish engineering.

Get An Engineering Licence

In the United States, if you want to offer engineering services directly to the public, you have to obtain a state license. You can apply for the license after completing your bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited program. To become licensed first you have to qualify Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam conducted by National Council of Examiners for Surveying and then you have to work for 4 years under the supervision of a professional Engineer. The final step in obtaining a license is to qualify Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. After qualifying these exam students becomes Professional Engineers (PEs).

Earn Certifications

Certifications in this field are optional but it can help a student in career enhancement and future job prospects.  A Certificate can be obtained in the specific field of mechanical engineering.

Mechanical Engineer Degree Levels

A four year Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering enriches the student with the fundamentals of engineering and gives him technical knowledge to obtain a license and start his career. This program contains different processes in manufacturing a mechanical device from designing to the assembly line to building prototypes and testing etc.
