About the Scholarship
American Music Therapy Association sponsors Brian & Cathy Smith Memorial Fund Scholarship. AMTA members Alice Avigal and the Smith family started this scholarship program in memory of Brian Smith, who died in drug-related accident but loved and valued music in his whole life when he was young.
How to apply for Brian & Cathy Smith Memorial Fund Scholarship award?
- The first step before applying for any scholarship is to complete the FAFSA application available online.
- The current official college transcript (student copy) must be submitted by the applicant.
Letters of recommendation must be submitted by the author
a. from a music therapy professor
b. from a professional familiar with the applicant's clinical skills
c. another person of the applicant's choice
Participation in AMTA, conferences, AMTAS, committees, presentations, publications - 20 points
Short essay (800 words) on long-term professional goals - 20 points
Brief essay (400 words) explaining why the applicant is pursuing training in chemical dependency or adolescent programs - 20 points
Brian & Cathy Smith Memorial Fund Scholarship award amounts to
This scholarship provides $500 annually which is non-renewable.
Total of one award id offered by this scholarship based on student's availability and meeting their eligibility.
The applications are to be submitted by the end of February 08, 2020. Applications and other related information are available on the American Music Therapy Association website.
The scholarship is for music therapy interns pursuing training in chemical dependency or in adolescent programs.
Applicants must be current Student Members of AMTA in the year in which they apply.
