About the Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded by the Ball State University. David Letterman, who was in the top 50 greatest TV stars of all time, started a scholarship in 1985 for Ball State students with a telecommunications minor or major. Lettermanbased his scholarship primarily on creativity, and not grades. 


How to apply for the scholarship?

  • Interested applicants should submit a creative project, such as writing, research, interactive media, computer graphics, or websites.

  • Applicants must also submit FAFSA.

How much the scholarship award amounts to?

The award is distributed between the first, second, and third place as follows:

  • Winner: $10,000
  • First runner-up: $5,000
  • Second runner-up: $3,333

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants should have between 30 and 102 total credit hours at the end of the fall semester.

  • Applicants should have a major or minor in telecommunications.

  • Applicants should be enrolled in at least 12 hours of telecommunications courses at the time.

  • Applicants should continue as a fulltime student the semester after receiving the scholarship.
