About the Scholarship

The National High School Essay Contest is organized by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), partnering up with the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA). Each year, the Contest approaches high-school students about the topic of peace & conflict, encouraging diplomatic partnership building, that may promote peace-building and protect national security.


 How to Apply?

To apply for the National Peace Essay Contest Scholarship, students can find the Essay Contest Form on the official webpage of AFSA. In addition to the Essay Contest Form, a completed copy of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) needs to be submitted by the respective student.


Scholarship Amount

In addition to the prize money of $2500, the winner of the contest will also receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to meet the US Department of State and USIP leadership, along with a full-tuition paid voyage when the student gets enrolled at an accredited University.

The runner-up of the competition will receive prize money of $1250, along with a full scholarship to participate in the International Diplomacy Program of the National Student Leadership Conference. 


Deadline and Information

The students are required to submit their applications by the end of January 01, 2020.

The applications can be found online on an official website provided by the Idaho State Board of Education.

Students whose parents are members of the foreign service, children of AFSA Staff, Booz Allen and Hamilton and/or Semester at Sea are not eligible.


Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the National Peace Essay Contest Scholarship are:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be in grades nine through twelve, attending a public, private, parochial school, home school or participating in a high school correspondence program in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or U.S. territories.
  • Must be in high school in any of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or U.S. territories.
  • Must not be a member of a family with a background of foreign service, Children of AFSA Staff, Booz Allen and Hamilton and/or Semester at Sea.
