About the Scholarship

The Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest is organised by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), an NPO that provides their services and assistance to the veterans of the U.S.

The Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest is an essay-writing contest with 4-levels. The contestants need to pass the initial level to be eligible for the next level. The essays will be evaluated on the basis of the applicant's knowledge, writing ability, and creativity.


How to  Apply?

The applications to the Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest can be found online on the official website of VFW. In addition to the application, The applicants are required to submit a self-written essay on the topic mentioned on the website. 

The essay must be 300 - 400 words long and must adhere to the rules and regulations mentioned on the website. Proper format and grammar is a crucial aspect.

The application and the essay must be submitted to the applicant's local VFW Post Chairman, on or before the deadline date.


Scholarship Amount

The Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest awards 54 monetary scholarships in the form of savings bonds each year. These awards are as follows:

  • $5000 - 1st place prize
  • $4000 - 2nd place prize
  • $3500 - 3rd place prize
  • $2750 - 4th place prize
  • $2500 - 5th place prize
  • $2000 - 6th place prize
  • $1750 - 7th place prize
  • $1500 - 8th and 9th place prize
  • $1250 - 10th and 11th place prize
  • $1000 - 12th to14th place prize
  • $750 - 15th and 16th place prize
  • $500 - 17th to 54th place prize

Deadline Information

The deadline date to apply for the Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest is October 31.


Eligibility Criteria

The applicants for the Patriots Pen Essay Writing Contest must be:

  • a U.S. student, in grades six through eight.
  • a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions, or in an overseas U.S. military/civilian dependent school. Home-schooled students and the dependents of U.S. military or civilian personnel in overseas schools can participate as well.
