American Physical Therapy Association Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE)
The American Physical Therapy Association Commission is an independent national accrediting agency since 1977 and has become the only recognized agency to accredit physical therapy programs since 1983.
It is recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit to accredit entry-level physical therapist and physical therapist assistant education programs.

Eligibility Requirements of colleges and universities for CAPTE accreditation
General Requirements for CAPTE accreditation-
CAPTE will consider applications for candidacy from institutions that will offer the single program through guaranteed seats for students from multiple institutions and use of synchronous distance education for all courses on different campuses.
Developing physical therapy education programs must be determined to be eligible for consideration by CAPTE for Candidate for Accreditation status.
Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to consideration for accreditation by CAPTE.
Developing physical therapy education programs that fail to achieve Candidate for Accreditation status must refrain from enrolling/matriculating students into the program until such time as Candidate for Accreditation status is granted.
Should there be any change in the status of the institution or program related to the requirements, they must be reported immediately to Accreditation staff.
The decision making bodies of CAPTE
The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education is a group of 31 individuals, with different backgrounds. The Commission is divided into three working groups- 10 members comprise the Physical Therapy Panel, which reviews Physical Therapy programs; 13 members comprise the Physical Therapy Assistant Panel, which reviews Physical therapy Assistant programs; and 8 members comprise the Central Panel, which makes all candidacy decisions.
