How to Get Into the Ivy League as an International Student

Overview

Ivy League schools receive tens of thousands of international applicants each year and typically accept 5-10% of them. The good news: top Ivies are need-blind for international students and meet 100% of demonstrated financial need — meaning admission is based purely on merit regardless of ability to pay.

Academic Requirements

Unweighted GPA typically 3.9-4.0, top 1-5% of graduating class. SAT 1500+/1600 or ACT 34+. Strong performance in the most challenging curriculum available (AP, IB, A-Levels, etc.). International qualifications like Indian board exams (95%+), Chinese Gaokao (top 1%), UK A-Levels (A*A*A*), French Bac (mention très bien 18+/20) are evaluated on scale.

Extracurriculars and Leadership

Depth over breadth. Demonstrable leadership, impact, and/or excellence in 2-3 areas. Internationally recognized competitions (IMO, IPhO, IOI, ISEF), original research published/presented, entrepreneurial ventures, community impact projects are all highly valued.

Essays and Recommendations

The Common App essay (650 words) should showcase your unique perspective and voice. School-specific supplementary essays demonstrate fit. Recommendations from teachers who know you well are critical.

Financial Aid
