Will Your Online Credits Transfer? What to Check 2025

Credit transfer is critical when taking online courses. A course completed and paid for but not accepted elsewhere is wasted money. Before enrolling, verify transferability through your state’s articulation agreements and your target university’s transfer credit policy.

Regional Accreditation is Essential

Only regionally accredited institutions’ credits transfer reliably. Accreditation bodies: SACSCOC (South), NWCCU (West), MSCHE (Mid-Atlantic), NECHE (New England), HLC (Midwest). If an online program holds regional accreditation, its credits are generally transferable to other regionally accredited schools.

Red Flag: National accreditation only (ACCSC, ACICS). These credits may not transfer to regionally accredited universities.

State Articulation Agreements

Many states have formal articulation agreements guaranteeing credit transfer between community colleges and universities. Example: Florida FTIC system guarantees transfer from state community colleges to state universities (if completed as a block).

Check: Your state’s Department of Education website for articulation agreements before enrolling in community college online courses.

University-Specific Transfer Policies

Every university has its own transfer credit policy. Example: University of Michigan may accept 90 credits in transfer; Stanford accepts fewer. Some universities cap transfer credits at 50%.

Action: Contact your target university’s admissions office. Ask: “Will you accept credits from [specific online program]? How many credits?” Get a written confirmation before enrolling.

Course-Level Evaluation

Even within a regionally accredited program, individual courses may or may not transfer. A course taught at community college level (introductory, grade inflation) may not transfer to a university as a 300-level or upper-division course. Transcript evaluation services (WES, NACES) can assess transferability.

GPA Impact

Generally, transfer grades are recorded on your new institution’s transcript but do NOT affect your GPA at the new school. However, some universities exclude transfer courses from GPA calculation for scholarships or honors eligibility.

Credit Banks & Prior Learning Assessment

Some universities operate “credit banks” that accept competency-based credits (e.g., from Western Governors University or CLEP exams). These don’t transfer as course credits but may reduce degree requirements.

Documentation to Collect

  • Official transcript from online program institution
  • Course syllabus and description from original institution
  • Articulation agreement (if applicable)
  • Written confirmation from target university admissions office
