The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Program is unique among major scholarships: applicants do NOT need to be Mensa members or even take the Mensa intelligence test. The competition is open to all students enrolled in U.S. accredited colleges. In 2026, the Mensa Foundation awards approximately 180 scholarships at the local chapter level (typically $250-$1,000 each) plus several national-level scholarships of $5,000-$10,000, distributed across local Mensa chapters in all 50 states.
Applications open September 1, 2026 and close January 15, 2027. Eligibility is unusually permissive: (1) U.S. resident, (2) currently enrolled in OR planning to enroll in a degree program at a U.S. accredited postsecondary institution. There is NO GPA minimum, NO age restriction, NO financial need requirement. The single criterion is the application essay — applicants submit ONE 550-word essay describing their academic goals and achievements. Mensa local chapters then judge essays from their region; top essays advance to national-level competition. The unusual structure means even applicants with modest credentials can win local awards if their essay is genuinely compelling.
The acceptance rate is structurally favorable because of the local-chapter judging: a chapter in a low-population area might receive only 10-20 applications competing for 1-2 awards (5-10% acceptance), while a chapter in a major metro might have 100+ applications. As of 2026, the Mensa Foundation has distributed over $2.5 million in scholarships since 1971. The financial reward is modest but the application is short (single essay), making it one of the highest "$/hour-of-effort" scholarships available. Worth applying for any college student with strong written communication skills.
