Located in northern New England as the 41st most populous state, Maine is inhabited by over 1.32 million people. The state has its small-town atmosphere, superb seafood, Atlantic beaches, and beautiful landmarks like Acadia National Park which are being attracted by many college students. The residents of Mainer also choose from 28 diverse schools, including Husson University, Bowdoin College, Maine College of Art, Bangor Theological Seminary, and Saint Joseph's College.
The average tuition & fees are $7,526 for in-state and $21,952 for out-of-state students in Maine. Mainers understand the value of education and thus the state is determined to help its residents achieve their post-secondary educational goals. They hope to encourage more students to pursue a college education by offering grants, college scholarships, and loan forgiveness programs.
Administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), these programs are funded by the state. To retain talented graduates within the state’s workforce the state legislature of Maine has developed these financial aid programs to encourage more residents to attend college. However, there are many Maine’s scholarships and loan forgiveness programs that are career specific, encouraging students to pursue degrees and careers in high demand fields such as medicine and veterinary science. Also, the programs are subject to change according to new legislation and the availability of funds as with all state-supported financial aid for college students.
It must be a priority for every student to fill and apply for FAFSA before applying for any grants, scholarships, or college loans. Students preparing for college, who are looking for financial aid to help pay for their education, need to fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. FAFSA is used to determine the level of financial assistance for which a student is eligible for all Federal and state-supported financial aid. After the student’s FAFSA has been submitted, they will receive their Student Aid Report, which will outline the specifics of their eligibility for government-supported college financial aid programs.
