Featuring over 30 universities and colleges, the state of Maine offers a huge array of scholarships to the students who are pursuing a post-secondary education in one of the educational institutions. Maine scholarships are available to the residents of the state as well as the students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in the institutions. The federal government, Maine State Corporation, the private companies, organizations and institutions around the state offer scholarships in order to relieve the students of the heavy financial burden related to getting an education. Most of the students are not able to continue with their education due to the rapid rising college costs. These scholarships help the students to pay for the tuition and fees, books and supplies, accommodation and other educational and living expenses.

The students of the United States are offered financial aids in the forms of student loans, grants, work-study programs, and scholarships. The students are expected to pay back the money awarded as student loans and need-based grants after the course of the program as these are solely based on the financial need produced by the students. The money students receive as scholarships and work-study programs. Scholarships are offered to students who have remarkable academic merit and other achievements and rarely based on financial needs. But the scholarships awarded based on the financial status of the students may have a set of conditions applied.

Though there are a number of different criteria that have to be followed to be a recipient of the state of Maine scholarships, the basic criteria are similar. Some of the basic eligibility criteria are:

  • You must be a citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the United States.

  • You must be a permanent resident or a legal non-resident of the state of Maine.

  • You must be enrolled or planning to enroll in one of the accredited universities or colleges of the state as well.

The major source of income in the state of Maine is been obtained from agricultural exports like cattle, dairy products, maple sugar, maple syrup, poultry and eggs, commercial fishing, naval shipbuilding, biotechnology, paper, and lumber industries. Students are offered various scholarships on the basis of their choice of major for higher education.
