Popularly known as the Magnolia State, the state of Mississippi is home to more than 40 educational institutions including reputed universities, colleges, and others. The students who are planning to pursue their post-secondary education are offered a number of scholarships in order to make it possible for them to cope up with the financial situations associated with higher learning. The scholarships are offered by the federal government, the Mississippi State Corporation, private companies, organizations, both private and public universities, colleges and other institutions. Students are generally awarded scholarships based on their academic merit, participation in the community service, and other factors. Certain scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate a dire financial need as well. These scholarships may have pre-set conditions that the students have to abide by.
Often students are left with no option but to discontinue their education due to the rapid rise of college costs. The federal government, state corporations, private companies and institutions offer a number of financial aids to the students who are facing a financial crisis. Student loans and certain grants are awarded to students who are in need, financially. The money received by the students through these aids is to be paid back to the providers. Work-study programs are offered based on the financial need as showed by the student as well, but the money they receive is received as a salary for their job. Hence, the students do not have to pay back the money. Scholarships are awarded to students mainly on the basis of their academic status and other achievements. The students need to pay back the money they receive as scholarships only in rare cases.
Though the providers require different criteria to be eligible, the basic criteria remain the same. Some of the basic eligibility criteria that are required to be a recipient of the Mississippi scholarships are given below:
