Louisiana State Loan Repayment Program is the student loan repayment program offered by the state of Louisiana. Its primary purpose is to encourage primary care practitioners to serve in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs). The eligible primary care practitioners include people who are specialty board-certified or have completed a residency in family practice osteopathic general practice, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, or dentistry.
Student loan repayment programs are programs offered by the Federal or the State government which help the borrowers in payment of their outstanding student loans. The mission of the Louisiana State Loan Repayment Program is to alleviate and overcome the problem of maldistribution of primary care health professionals in rural and inner-city areas in the state.

To become eligible for Louisiana State Loan Repayment Program, the following conditions need to be fulfilled:
Applicants should be working in a federally-designated HSPA
Applicants should be working for a public or non-profit agency
Applicants should be ready to work full time (40 hours a week) in an outpatient capacity
Applicants should accept assignments of Medicare, Medicaid
Applicants must be US citizens and licensed to practice in Louisiana
Applicants must have no other obligation for health professional services
Applicants should not have defaulted on educational loans
Applicants should not have breached any health professional service contract
Applicants must accept terms of the agreement

Amount awarded under this program
In sync with the mission of this program to enhance the provision of health care services, the program will repay governmental or commercial educational loans obtained by the medical practitioner. Physicians and dentists may be eligible to receive up to $30,000 annually for a three-year initial commitment.
Applicants who have completed their original commitment and are currently staying in an eligible HSPA site with educational loans to repay may be able to extend their commitment with a two-year renewal. They should be compliant with all the eligibility requirements.
