What is the National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education

National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education was founded and established in the year 1954 and is also known as NCATE.

This commission is for accrediting teacher certification programs in colleges/universities in the United States.

NCATE is a council of educators. It is not a regional accreditation, unlike others. It is only specific to a teacher’s education. This accreditation is for the programs offered for teaching and learning.

The NCATE has five foundings, namely:

  • AACTE- The American Association for Teacher Education

  • NEA- The National Education Association

  • NSBA-The National School Boards Association

  • NASDTEC-The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification.

  • CCSSO- The Council of Chief State School Officers.

Guiding values of an institution

  • A college should have integrity and adhere to their core values.

  • An institution should be good in their organization and development.

  • Student learning practices should be focused.

  • An institution that is willing to get accredited should have transparency between students and organization.

  • Education should be considered as public purpose more than a business.

  • The institution should be mission-centered.

Institution requirements for NACTE

  • Previous accreditation records - A college/university should maintain the accreditation records of the past and present.

  • Governing Board - Every college should be having a governing board with council board members.

  • Educational Resources - All the needful resources should be availed in an institution.

  • Educational oriented - A college should be educational oriented and must focus more on the same.

  • Financial Capacity - The funding status and financial support should be strong.

  • Administration - An institution should have a good administration who can manage all the resources.

  • The degree will be valued by any institution or workplace.

  • A student will have professional school personnel to teach.

  • It provides leadership and engages in continuous assessments which in turn will benefit students.

NACTE accreditation mainly is for the teachers and educators and it will help college/universities prove that they have well-qualified teachers/educators. This will directly affect the student learning programs.

This accreditation is a program accreditation and an institution can have more than one accreditation, so in turn, it will help to improve the reputation of school/college and benefit students.
