In 1837, the university was founded as Muskingum College, to educate the people of the farming village of New Concord. In 2007, the college was renamed to Muskingum University.

The mission of the Muskingum University is to offer quality academic programs in liberal arts and sciences and create a caring community, develop intellectual growth, spiritual growth, and to create ideal citizens for the society.
