New York Institute of Technology, also known as New York Tech or NYIT, is a private, not-for-profit institution located at New York. NYIT is a private doctoral research university with two main campuses in New York - one in Manhattan and the other campus is situated Old Westbury, Long Island . New York Institute of Technology campus is spread around 1050 acres with many buildings including a sports complex, administrative and academic buildings, and a 100-seat auditorium.
The college has the tagline "Home of Makers, Doers, Inventors, and Innovators". With a total of five schools and two colleges, NYIT aims to impart significant education on technology, and applied scientific research. Two Turing awards are associated with the institution; The Turing Award, named after Alan Turning, is by and large acknowledged as the highest distinction in Computer Science.
The founders of NYIT, spearheaded by Dr. Alexander Schure, Ph.D., wished to kickstart an institution that would provide the students with necessary training to become successful in their chosen careers. As a result, NYIT was founded in 1955 with only nine students and Dr. Schure serving as the president of the institution. A provisional charter was availed in 1960, which later attained permanency in 1962, allowing the college to function as a 4-year college with the capacity to award Bachelor's Degrees. The New York College of Osthopathic Medicine (NYCOM) was established in the late 1970s. Hank Foley, Ph.D, became the fourth president of NYIT in 2017.
As of fall 2018, the numbers of Undergraduates and Postgraduates enrolled at NYIT were 3,712 students and 3,485 students respectively. Most popular majors at NYIT include Biology, Architecture, Information Science, Electrical Engineering, Biotechnology and so on. The college has a student-faculty ratio of 13:1.
