Watkins College of Art Design & Film is Nashville's secret weapon for serious creative students. This isn't a university with an art school tacked on—it's an art school through and through. Every resource, every decision, every professor is in service of making you a better artist.
The curriculum balances hands-on studio work with liberal arts foundation courses. You're building a portfolio in a city with genuine creative industry (film, music, design). Class sizes stay tiny, so critiques matter and relationships with faculty are real mentorship opportunities.
The tradeoff: limited diversity of academic programs if you change your mind about art. The school is also less wealthy than RISD or other flagship art schools, which means fewer resources in some areas. But for the money and the teaching quality, Watkins competes with schools charging triple.
