Fayetteville State University is a 4 year, mid-sized, a public university established that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. Located at Fayetteville, North Carolina the University was first established as an independent institution by few progressive African American teachers in 1867. In 1877 the state legislature provided for the establishment of a normal school for the education of black teachers. Several areas of the state competed for this first state-supported academy, but the Howard School was selected because of its successful record. It became a teacher training institution known as the State Colored Normal School. It was only after 1969 that the School got the recognition of a University and stiving on its own belief. Robert Harris was the first leader of Howard School. At present, the University is spread over 156 acres and 36 buildings, with an estimated value of over $35 million and it no longer remained exclusive for teacher training institutions.
