About the Scholarship

School Band & Orchestra (SBO) Magazine has been honoring amazing music educators from all 50 states from the past 20 years. SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship is organized to promote the interest of students in the music programs.

This scholarship awards prize money, along with musical merchandise from the co-sponsors of the essay contest - National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), Alfred Music Publishing, Sabian Ltd., Woodwind & Brasswind, as well as Yamaha Corporation of America (YCA).

How to apply for this scholarship?

  • To apply for the SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship, the applicant must submit a completed copy of the application available online on the official website of the School Band and Orchestra (SBO) magazine website.

  • Along with the application, a candidate must also send a self-written essay in about 250 words, on the topic prompted for the year through the official website.

  • The application submitted by the applicant must include the following details -name, residential address, contact information, age, grade, the applicant's preferable musical instrument, name and contact details of the applicant's music teacher, the applicant's attended school's name and contact details.

The submission dates for the scholarship award start from September 1.

Scholarship Award Amount

The SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship provides the winners of the Essay competition with non-renewable prize money of $1000 each, annually.

In total, the contest gives out 10 awards, which includes

  • 5 awards for applicants in grades four through eight.

  • 5 awards for applicants in grades nine through twelve.

Deadline Information

The applicants need to submit their 250-words essay along with the completed copy of the application on or before December 31, 2019. 

Any delay in the submission of the application will lead to disqualification.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to apply for the SBO Magazine Music Student Scholarship, the applicants must consider the following to see if they are actually good to apply for the scholarship.

  • An applicant must be a student in grades four through twelve at any public or private school.

  • The applicant must have a passion for music.

  • A candidate must be a legally recognized citizen of the U.S.
