When it comes to admissions in the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the stakes are pretty high. With a reputation of delivering only the best to its students, the eligibility criteria are stricter than other colleges. The acceptance rate is 64% which gives the University 11th position in terms of the lowest admission rate. The academic requirements are very high which narrows the admission only for ‘B+’ and onwards High School graders. NJIT offers admission in over 125 programs and has a franchise of 11 specialized schools all over the States and 11,000 students. In recent years, out of 8,123 applications, 5,171 candidates were accepted for further admission processes.

  • Out of 2,514 female candidate applications, 1,601 were accepted for the admission process. 

  • In the male category, 3,507 candidates were selected among 5,609 applicants. 

  • At present 1,286 students are enrolled in some graduate or undergraduate program tracks. 

  • The percentage of admissions made on the basis of enrollment rate is around 25%.

Freshmen Admission Process

This course is mainly designed for undergraduate students or freshmen. The undergraduate program track of NJIT has attained 50th position at US News Rankings for the ‘Best Undergraduate Colleges in America’.On average, students passing this program with satisfactory results end up with six-digit salaries. To apply for Freshmen Admission Process you need to do the following:

  • Submit a complete application on the official admission website of NJIT.

  • Pay the Application Fee of $75 (or a College Board Waiver).

  • Must submit a High School Transcript.

  • One must comply with satisfactory SAT (use code 2513) or ACT (use code 2580)scorecards.

  • A letter of Recommendation is necessary for the application process.

  • A portfolio is only required for applicants who wish to attend the College of Architecture and Design.

Transfer Students Admission Process

NJIT offers course transfer program admissions as well. There is no upper limit for the number of courses one can apply for but they must have 33 upper-division credits approved by the department of one’s major subject. For the transfer, program one needs to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Complete at least a 15 hour semester including English Composition, Mathematics, and Science. 

  • Pay for the Application fee and submit all the official transcripts of all the attended schools.

Graduate Admission Process

For Graduate student admission program one must find oneself satisfying the following checklist:

  • Must possess all the scores and documents as stated in the undergraduate section. 

  • The candidate must possess a good academic record in his/her undergraduate degree.

International Students Admission Process

NJIT is home to over 1,400 students coming from 70 different countries. So if you are a non-resident student and wants to apply for NJIT, you must do the following:

  • Must complete the application form in detail and pay the fee of $75.

  • Official High/Secondary School Transcript in English or Notarized Copy should be attached with the application form.

  • Official SAT (use code 2513) or ACT (use code 2580) Results.

  • TOEFL score of 550 or IELTS  score of 6.0 is mandatory.

It is important for students to note that SAT scores are mandatory in order to be considered for admission at the university. And, the average SAT score of students who get into the college is 1290. However, even those applicants with SAT scores of 1190 or below could also be accepted in some cases. As for the ACT scores, an average score of 27 is needed to get accepted to New Jersey Institute of Technology. Notably, the composite ACT scores of most applicants who get accepted by New Jersey Institute of Technology are generally within the 24-31 range. The minimum ACT composite score that is required in order to be considered for admission by NJIT currently stands at 24. Moreover, the submission of ACT scores is mandatory to be considered for admission. As many as 17% of the applicants submit their ACT scores for admission to the university, as per the latest information.

The University demands very high academic records. It has very high requirements for admission test scores, generally admitting students who score in the top 24 percent. The following are the general requirements for getting into NJIT.

  • The application form must be filled at the official portal of CommonApp and the application fee for $75 must be paid beforehand. Note: The fee waiver is accepted if the student has appeared for the first time in the SAT /ACT examination.

  • The SAT/ACT and average GPA must be as per the minimum aggregate requirement by the University.

  • Official High school transcripts must be submitted by the students.

  • Proof of participation in any pre-college courses should be mentioned while submitting documents for verification.

  • For postgraduate courses, one must submit proof of graduation.

  • AP and Dual credits are accepted as well.

NJIT encourages all its applicants to appear for the aforesaid tests and meet the satisfactory results, 6 months prior to the deadline.

New Jersey Institute of Technology had a total of 8,123 applicants in 2021. From this pool, the number of accepted students was 5,171. 

The NJIT acceptance rate is 64%, which is comparable to another university in Newark, Rutgers University. Rutgers has an acceptance rate of 63%.

The NJIT acceptance rate is relatively lower than the acceptance rates of other comparable colleges in New Jersey, such as Fairleigh Dickinson University (89%) and Rider University (70%).

Other comparable public colleges, such as West Chester University in Pennsylvania and Minot State University in North Dakota, have an acceptance rate of 74% and 50%, respectively.

There was more than twice the number of applications from men than women. NJIT received 5,609 applications from men and only 2,514 applications from women. 

The 2021 NJIT applicant pool was thus 69% men and 31% women.

Of the total of 5,171 who were accepted into the university, 1,601 were women, and 3,570 were men. Both women and men were accepted at a rate of 64% by NJIT.
