About the Scholarship

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund is awarded by the Army Emergency Relief (AER), an NPO that helps the  U.S. Army and families via assisting them in times of need, namely - grants, no-interest loans, or college scholarships.

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund assists the students applying for children, if not being funded by other sources. The scholarship is available for 4 years, and only in case if it is permitted by the sponsoring soldier's officer.


How to Apply?

The documents required by the applicant to be considered for the MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund are:

  • A completed application, which can be found online on the official website of AER
  • The applicant's most recent official/unofficial transcripts
  • A copy of the leave and earnings statement of the applicant's sponsor soldier, if on active-duty
  • The sponsor soldier's Title 10 orders and casualty report, if available
  • The applicant's SAR

The required documents must be submitted on or before the deadline date.


Scholarship Amount

The monetary reward provided by the MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund is between $500 and $3400, awarded individually on the basis of the applicant's financial standing and requirements.

The number of rewards is subject to Fund availability and the number of eligible candidates. The awards are non-renewable, but the students are allowed to reapply next year.


Deadline Information

The above-mentioned documents need to be submitted on or before 3:00 p.m. EDT on the deadline date of April 1.


Eligibility Criteria

The individual applying for the MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund must be:

  • a U.S. citizen.
  • an incoming or current undergraduate student. Please note: If the student will be graduating in December following the application deadline date, he/she should contact AER for assistance.
  • enrolled, accepted, or pending acceptance as a full-time student in a post-secondary or vocational U.S. educational institution approved and accredited by the U.S. Department of Education with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • registered in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS).
  • the dependent of an Army soldier who is on - active-duty, retired or deceased while on active duty or after retirement.
  • under the age of 23. Eligibility ends at the end of the semester/term in which the student reaches his/her 23rd birthday. For example, turning 23 in December would mean the scholarship would be awarded for the fall term only.
  • unmarried and remain unmarried for the entire academic year.
