Purdue is a well-known, public university based in Indiana, so it’s no surprise that it received a relatively large number of applications. The school is not overly selective however, with 31,146 (or 58%) of its 53,722 applicants receiving admission to the school.
That said, Purdue is somewhat more selective than some other schools in Indiana. Ball State, for example, accepted 65% of applicants and Indiana University Bloomington accepted 77%.
The yield, or percentage of admitted students who enrolled in the school, is 27%. This is in line with other schools in Indiana, such as Ball State (which had a yield of 24%), or Indiana University Bloomington (which admitted 77% of applicants and yielded 24%).
The school is slightly more popular with women than men, with a ratio of 1.16 female applicants for each male applicant. Ultimately, however, more men chose to enroll — with 4,066 men enrolling compared to 4,031 women. This makes for a student body that is relatively balanced in terms of gender.
Acceptance rates and yields are useful metrics for prospective students to look at when choosing where to apply. High acceptance rates are good for schools you’re considering as a safety school. However, high acceptance rates tend to indicate less prestigious programs. As a public, state school, Purdue is less selective and a good choice for in-state students.
Yield rates are a strong measure of a school’s desirability. Ivy League schools, like Harvard, have yields upwards of 80%, showing that many students want to go to the school if they get the option.
