Successful sports teams are good public relations for the school as it puts the school in the public eye and attracts students and it's said to attract donors and donations as well. The college scholarships offered makes it possible to attract the athletes - schools that refrain from or cannot afford to award athletic scholarships can't attract the best athletes.

Scholarship funding awarded by universities and c comes in the form of both full and partial scholarships so that coaches are able to put together the best team possible, and a player's academic record is an important factor in determining his or her eligibility for those awards.

The typical sports scholarships

While most of the colleges belong to the NCAA and play at Division-1, Division-2, or Division-3.

  • At D-3 there are no athletic scholarships available.

  • At D-2 there are a few athletic scholarships available.

  • At D-1 most of the athletic scholarships are available.

The guaranteed full scholarship for all sports athletic scholarships is the ones that are given to American Football players and Basketball players. There are various other scholarships that are limited in number, and also there are fewer scholarships than total players. Thus, it is obvious that just one or two players may get a full scholarship, but typically the scholarship money is divided among all or most of the players as a partial athletic scholarship.

Although there are other sports organizations like the NAIA, they are more like the NCAA D-2, and there are sports like men's rowing which is governed by the IRA (Intercollegiate Rowing Association).
