Grants

Grants are offered to students in need of monetary relief. Grants are offered in specific cases and a student must qualify for one. Here are some of the grants offered to students of Creighton University.

  • Federal Pell Grant: This is a federally funded grant program offered to students in the undergraduate program. A student can qualify for this grant if the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is determined. This determination is done through the enrollment status and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): This grant is a federally funded one. It is provided to students who are in dire financial need. Only undergraduate students can avail the benefits of this grant. This grant is reserved for students who qualify for Federal Pell Grant funds.
  • Nebraska State Grant Program: The grant is funded by the state as well as the federal government. This grant is reserved for residents of Nebraska who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant funds.
  • Creighton University Grant (CUG): This is an institutionally funded grant, reserved for students who require financial assistance. There is an eligibility process that takes place before a student is awarded this grant.

Direct Loans

Direct loans can only be applied for after the borrower completes a mandatory Master Promissory Note (MPN) and on-line loan entrance counselling. Only once loan entrance counselling is completed can the borrower move forward with the process. Direct Student Loans are of 5 types.

  • Subsidized: Eligibility for this loan is determined by FAFSA. The student must have some form of financial need. The student must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis for the loan to be applicable.
  • Unsubsidised: The student does not have to be in financial need to qualify for this loan. For further information visit the University website. It talks in great detail about this loan.
  • PLUS: This is an unsubsidized loan. The parents of a dependent student can apply for this loan. It helps cover only the educational expenses minus any other financial assistance. Interest is charged during all periods. A FAFSA helps check the eligibility of the parents to pay back the loan.
  • Grad PLUS: This loan is applicable to professional and graduate students who are creditworthy.  Students can borrow up to the full cost of attendance. The interest here is also charged during all periods.
  • Consolidation: A consolidation loan helps repay off old loans and creates a new loan. Various federal student loans can be consolidated into one Direct Consolidated Loan. This is a good way to combine various loans and it makes the loan more manageable.

A direct loan program guide is provided by the university to make matters simpler for the students.

Alternative Loan

These loans are non-federal and private in nature. They can be used once a student has exhausted all other resources in terms of federal aid, scholarships and grants. Depending on the lender the rate of interest etc. will vary. Students can borrow up to the cost of education minus any other aid. Creighton provides its students with a Private Loan Comparison Chart so that they can see which loan provider works for them.

Creighton Undergraduate Institutional Loan Program

The University allows students to borrow up to a certain amount of money. The university has a fixed interest rate of 6%. Repayment of the loan occurs either 9 months after graduation or less than half time enrollment.

Federal Nursing Loans

These are low-interest loans for financially unstable nursing students. These loans are provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. The amount changes yearly depending on the fluidity of funds. There is a fixed interest rate of 5%.
