Michigan Technological University also known as MTU is a public institution in Houghton, Michigan that was established in the year 1885 as Michigan Mining School.
The institution was established by the state of Michigan to train mining engineers to better operate the local copper mines, the school started with four faculty members and 23 students on the second floor of a building on Montezuma Avenue in Houghton.
Michigan mining school and college of mines trained nationally and internationally recognized mining engineers. In 1899-1924 under President Fred W. McNair the college added several buildings and modified the programs offered by them.
The university focuses on the overall development of the students, their athletic teams are nicknamed as the Huskies and compete primarily in the NCAA Division. The men's hockey team competes in Division I as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and has won three national championships.
The motto of the MTU is “Create the Future”. The university offers a 120-degree program which includes programs in Accounting, Actuarial Science, Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Studies, American Studies, Applied Natural Resource Economics, Applied Science Education, Art, Biology, Biological Sciences, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and many more.
Presently, there are 7,712 students enrolled in different programs offered by the university. They also hold highly trained and expert faculty to help the students. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1 which means there is one faculty present on every 12 students.
MTU Accreditation
The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) which is a regional accreditation agency that accredits degree-granting colleges and universities that are based in a 19-state region of the United States.
