Fencing is a complicated sport. Those who are smart and have fast reactions tend to be good at fencing. Most people say fencing is like a physical chess game, and it is true. You need to out-smart and out-maneuver your opponent.

One would need a mix of different skill sets to be truly good at fencing. You need to be quick and agile in motions that are very far from natural. One of the few advantages a person can have at the beginning is being tall which most certainly helps with reach. But athleticism is not all.

You must also be able to concoct strategies and make new ones based on the skill set of your opponent. You also need to have a trained mind. There are various styles in fencing such as Epee, Foil, Sabre, etc. that also has specific strategies and terminology that make each of them different. An excellent place to start is the United States Fencing Association. USFA has affiliated clubs which tend to have more highly-trained staff, but also tend to be more expensive. Yes, fencing costs money in most cases.

Collegiate fencing has existed for a long time, with some of the first university teams coming from the prestigious Ivy League. Fencing scholarship can be very rewarding but it takes some strategizing, persistence, and skill, to get the scholarship. When it comes to funding the college scholarship it is important that the more particular your passion or sport, the better chance you will have of receiving award money targeted towards that particular talent from a relevant benefactor.

Though not all schools offer it, some universities like Columbia, Penn State, Princeton, Notre Dame, Harvard St. John's, and Penn have highly prestigious programs and offer generous financial aid and college scholarships to well-qualified fencers. As the sport grows in popularity in the United States, so will competition for scholarships. So if you’re at all serious about fencing and your skill level is high, the sport could be something that not only gets you a good amount of scholarship money but lands you at a top university because of your unique skill.
