Field hockey, also called hockey, is an outdoor game played by two opposing teams of 11 players each who use sticks at the striking end to hit a ball into their opponent's goal. The number of US High School Field Hockey Players  2019-20 is 64,364.

College field hockey can be found across multiple U.S. regions, including the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Midwest, with a few programs in California.

What are Field Hockey Scholarships?

Field hockey programs give students who are great athletes a chance to continue competing at the college level while pursuing a degree, and also to gain financial assistance to pay for the cost of college which is termed as “Field Hockey Scholarship”. Here are a few points you might want to know about these scholarships.

  • Though some schools have both male and female club field hockey teams, varsity level field hockey teams are made up importantly of women. 

  • Traditional field hockey scholarships are competitive and require minimum GPA requirements. 

  • Student-athletes who want to be recruited for field hockey will have to build a strong recruiting profile, clearly communicate with college coaches, create a highlight video, and attend tournaments and prospect camps.

  • They also usually come in the form of partial scholarships covering 25 percent of your college costs or more. It depends on the program and how available funds are distributed among team members.

NCAA Scholarships

About $1 billion in full and partial athletic scholarships are awarded each year by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to more than 126,000 undergraduate student-athletes at Division I and Division II schools. You will have to meet the requirements of the NCAA to receive any funding. 

  • You should graduate from high school.

  • You should complete 10 core courses before your seventh semester (senior year), including seven in English, math, or natural/physical science. 

  • You should earn at least a 2.3 GPA in your core courses that are outlined the NCAA academic requirements.

  • You should achieve an SAT combined score or ACT sum score matching your core-course GPA on the NCAA sliding scale for Division 1.

NAIA 

NAIA freshman eligibility requires at least two of these three requirements:

  • You should meet the test score requirement, which is a minimum score of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT. 

  • Only critical reading and math sections are considered on the SAT.

  • You should graduate from high school with at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This accepts the GPA calculation your high school provides.

  • You should graduate in the top 50 percent of your high school class.

College Scholarships

  • If you are planning to play Field Hockey in college at any level, your college could have funds and provisions. 

  • It will usually be set up by alumni who played the sport or in honor of relatives and important personalities. 

  • Make sure you do your research and talk to your financial aid office and athletic departments about local and college-based awards you could be eligible for.

  • College-based funding is managed by an outside organization, so eligible players will need a minimum GPA.

American Field Hockey Foundation

  • Scholarships are awarded through the American Field Hockey Foundation (AFHF) to college student-athletes based on leadership, community service, desire, commitment, and academic success. 

  • While the foundation offers mentoring support to high school female players, both male and female student-athletes are invited to apply for scholarships through the organization. 

  • The general scholarship application is available through the organization’s website. 

USA Field Hockey

  • It is a national governing body of field hockey that gives opportunities for both male and female field hockey players to win scholarships or funding for college through competitions. 

  • It is sponsored by the national organization and state-based clubs. 

  • If you live in a state with member clubs of USA Field Hockey, do some research and find out if you could be eligible for some money for college.

Despite what positions you play on the field, here are a few tips to better your chances of getting the scholarship.

  • By maintaining good grades and by exhibiting your skills and talents.

  • By doing some research on the college or scholarship you are aiming for.

  • It is always better to have an alternate plan if something goes wrong. So make sure you are aware of every other opportunity that is open for you.

How to apply for Field Hockey Scholarships?

Start researching by browsing which schools offer field hockey scholarships. Make a list of between 20-30 potential schools that you’re interested in. Do some analysis whether you are eligible or not and also regarding the scholarships which suit your plan, all the criteria, and requirements. Include these following steps:

Here are a few examples of College scholarship programs for students who play field hockey.

Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program

The Foot Locker Foundation awards 20 incoming college freshmen with $20,000 in scholarship funding through the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program. In order to be eligible for the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program: 

  • The applicant must be a current high school senior entering a four-year, accredited US college or university in the upcoming Fall, 

  • Should be currently a member of a high school sports team or be involved in after-school sports, 

  • Should have maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher from ninth grade to the first semester of 12th grade. 

  • Should be a U.S. citizen or US Permanent Legal Resident.

Mike Lozano Scholarship

  • It is given annually to a graduating high school senior athlete from the northernmost 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. 

  • The scholarship award amount is $2500 and the deadline to apply for this scholarship will usually be in the month of February.

  • A minimum 2.0 GPA is required and students must be interested in pursuing a degree in education and/or coaching for the purpose of teaching and coaching at the high school level upon graduation from college.
