If you are planning to get an Ice Hockey Scholarship then know that there exists a very tough competition out there. The competition also varies from school to school. Some colleges are well known for their football and basketball teams but some colleges put emphasis on their hockey teams. Over the years clubs have gained popularity and even club players are also eligible for athletic awards if that school does not have a traditional ice hockey program. Traditional scholarships from big schools are highly competitive, in order to get on you just don't need to excel in hockey but also in academics as you have to fulfill their minimum GPA standard.

You should never overlook or ignore your local hockey leagues and organizations if you belong to them, as there are always chances of receiving a college scholarship through local leagues as well. If you are part of a local hockey league then it also creates a very positive impression in front of the selection committee of the school you are applying to. Local groups place less emphasis on talent than college-based awards in order to be a part of local schools, you just need to prove that you have played the sport.

Different types of Ice Hockey Scholarships

There are four different types of Ice Hockey Scholarships. If at all you are not recruited or awarded a full-time scholarship you can still earn a roster spot as a recruited walk-on or unrecruited walk-on. Here are the four different types of Ice Hockey Scholarships that one should be aware of.

  • Full-ride scholarship offerA Full-ride scholarship is a scholarship that is reserved for those who compete in the USHL Junior Hockey League. But this doesn't mean that players who didn’t play for a tier 1 junior hockey league won't receive a full ride. Division 1 hockey programs also recruit athletes from tier 2 junior hockey leagues.

  • Partial scholarship offerIn partial scholarship colleges and coaches try to award partial scholarships to as many recruits and rooster spot holders. There is a maximum scholarship budget of 18 with an average team size of 28. For Division 2 maximum scholarship budget of 13.5 with an average team size of 31. Partial scholarship covers one’s cost of tuition, books, room, and board, and other fees.

  • Recruited walk-on: If a player is not offered any athletic scholarship but is offered a spot on the roster then this is known as a recruited walk-on. This is a common trend because many times coaches don't have many funds to give scholarships to every athlete.

  • Unrecruited walk-on: Walk-on tryouts are held if coaches need to feel roster spots even after the end of the recruiting process. Student-athletes can always try out this opportunity and make it to the roster spot.

If you wish to play for ACHA then you have to be very strong in your academics along with sports as all ACHA scholarship packages are academics based.
