The most famous, competitive, and renowned scholarships are naturally found at places where snowboarding and skiing is a way of life. Most skiing and snowboarding scholarships are at the college level under the rules of NCAA. You will have to fulfill certain eligibility criteria for these scholarships like a minimum GPA to qualify not only for scholarships but to land in a position on a team. You’ll also have to maintain your grades up to stay on the team, as all those awarded NCAA sports scholarships must maintain a strong academic record to participate in their college sports programs. If you are good at academics and the sports that you play then getting a scholarship is not a tough job.
Students often neglect and overlook small schools. But usually, competition for winter sports is very high at top schools. So it is good on your part not to wipe out or eliminate the option of small schools. For example, the College of New Jersey, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, DePauw University, and 342 other colleges offer up to $9,000 in scholarships for every year of ski and snowboard club. Plus, if you're in a leadership role, you may be eligible for an extra scholarship of up to $3,375 per year!
There are different types of college scholarships available for Skiing and Snowboarding under athletic scholarships. Here are those.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) is a very famous association that offers scholarships for athletes. Each year worth $1 billion scholarships are awarded in the full and partial form to more than 126,000 undergraduate student-athletes at Division I and Division II schools. Ski scholarships are also awarded by NCAA. These scholarships though given by the college one has to fulfill NCAA eligibility criteria.
College wise Ski scholarships are also given to students. If you plan to be a part of your college ski and snowboarding team you need to look for the eligibility criteria of your intended college. One such example of a school which offers skiing and snowboarding scholarship is Sierra Nevada College. You have to do research to find the colleges offering such scholarships.
There is another association that provides scholarships to skiers and snowboarders, i.e. the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. It provides various tuition assistance programs for student-athletes. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are:
Snowboarders should have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Applicants’ annual incomes should not be greater than $50,000.
Skiers must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
If you are Olympic caliber and qualify for the A, B, or C teams, you’re automatically eligible for an award. Alumni are also eligible for two years of financial assistance after they officially retire.
