Softball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of 10 players. It is generally agreed that softball developed from a game called indoor baseball, first played in Chicago in 1887.

It is played with a larger ball on a field that has:

  • Base lengths of 60 feet.

  • A pitcher's mound that ranges from 43–50 feet away from home plate.

  • A home run fence that is 220–300 feet away from home plate.

Softball at the Summer Olympics was on the Olympic program from 1996 to 2008. Softball was removed from the program for 2012 and 2016 but was added, along with baseball, for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

There are many college scholarships under athletic scholarships available for softball players. Let us now discuss the softball scholarship.

What are Softball Scholarships?

Financial aid for college-bound softball players is available from several sources. Most of the larger schools also have scholarship funds offered by alumni who have played on their college team, and funding dedicated to drawing talented softball players to that college. The amount of scholarships provided to student-athletes depends on which division a school participates in.

  • NCAA Division I: 12 total scholarships (sum of partial and full scholarships)

  • NCAA Division II: 7.2 total scholarships (sum of partial and full scholarships)

  • NCAA Division III: 0 scholarships

  • NAIA: 10 total scholarships (sum of partial and full scholarships)

  • NJCAA: 24 total scholarships (sum of partial and full scholarships)

Summer leagues are a particularly good source if you play in one or have played in one, and also a good place to gain exposure if you are going for a college-funded award. Many of these local scholarships look beyond talent if they consider it at all, and instead take into account academic achievements, financial need, extracurricular activities outside of softball, community service, and overall character.

NCAA Scholarships

About $1 billion in full and partial athletic scholarships are awarded each year by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to more than 126,000 undergraduate student-athletes at Division I and Division II schools. You will have to meet the requirements of the NCAA to receive any funding.

  • You should graduate from high school.

  • You should complete 10 core courses before your seventh semester (senior year), including seven in English, math, or natural/physical science.

  • You should earn at least a 2.3 GPA in your core courses that are outlined the NCAA academic requirements.

  • You should achieve an SAT combined score or ACT sum score matching your core-course GPA on the NCAA sliding scale for Division 1.

NAIA

NAIA freshman eligibility requires at least two of these three requirements:

  • You should meet the test score requirement, which is a minimum score of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT. Only critical reading and math sections are considered on the SAT.

  • You should graduate from high school with at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This accepts the GPA calculation your high school provides.

  • You should graduate in the top 50 percent of your high school class.

College Scholarships

  • If you are planning to play softball in college at any level, your college could have funds and provisions.

  • It will usually be set up by alumni who played the sport or in honor of relatives and important personalities.

  • Make sure you do your research and talk to your financial aid office and athletic departments about local and college-based awards you could be eligible for.

  • College-based funding is managed by an outside organization, so eligible players will need a minimum GPA.

Are you wondering what are the chances of getting a softball scholarship? The chances of receiving a Division One Softball Scholarship are very remote. There are only about 300 division one programs, and they all only have 12 scholarships. With hundreds of thousands of HS softball players out there, the odds are less than 5%.
