Wrestling involves certain techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. The sport is of different types like Folkstyle, Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Judo, Sombo and others.
It consists of a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. The techniques of wrestling have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems.
If you’re a good wrestler with decent grades, college scholarships for wrestlers will always come in handy.
It is suggested that the student-athletes should target schools that are a good fit for them, maintain their grades above the required eligibility GPA and anticipate which weight classes coaches will recruit. Keep these tips in mind:
It is important to know the differences in the division levels.
Athletic Scholarships are offered by-
NCAA Division 1
NCAA Division 2
Whereas NCAA Division 3 programs provide scholarship packages made up of
Division 3 and NAIA programs are typically smaller, private schools.
If you have the ability to score points both at the national as well as the state level,College coaches prioritize wrestling scholarships to recruits who have the ability to score points both at the state and national level. Maximizing your point potential in high school, in addition to being nationally ranked, will improve your chances of securing a roster spot.
College coaches are in search of student-athletes and consider a candidate’s academics as seriously as their athletic ability. Additional academic aid calls for high test scores and a solid GPA. You can sign up for the NCAA Eligibility Center if you’re interested in D1 or D2.
You should always keep a backup, if a division isn’t Division 1 , don’t overlook it. There are several competitive programs—from Division 2 to NJCAA—that could offer a better financial package than Division 1. It may happen that you might find that a Division 3 package, made up of grants and academic aid, brings college costs down significantly. There’s more wrestling scholarships available per team at junior colleges.
A potential NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 college-athlete is required to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center .
You also need to submit the transcripts and SAT/ACT test scores, as well as answer questions pertaining to their amateur status. Student-athletes must meet the academic requirements and be cleared by the Eligibility Center to secure a roster spot and athletic scholarship.
The requirements vary slightly between Division 1 and Division 2, but the overall method to determine eligibility is the same
